3-day PORTRAIT IN OILS workshop with PATRICK BYRNES 2025
3-day PORTRAIT IN OILS workshop with PATRICK BYRNES 2025
Studio Paradiso is pleased to welcome back to Seattle painter/draftsman Patrick Byrnes from Paris, France for a 3-day PORTRAIT IN OILS workshop in our Pioneer Square studio this summer!! This is a rare opportunity to study with Patrick and space is limited to only 12 students. Portrait workshop dates are August 22nd, 23rd, & 24th 2025 (Friday, Saturday & Sunday) and students are welcome to draw or oil paint under Patrick’s guidance.
Workshop Description:
In this three-day workshop, artists will make a portrait painting from the live model using a limited palette of oil colors following a lucid, three-step process that emphasizes accurate draftsmanship, analytical color mixing, and sensitive rendering. Patrick will guide artists with daily demonstrations and comprehensive personalized critiques through each stage of the process— from creating a convincing likeness with structural drawing— to rational color mixing of flesh tones via analysis of the relative properties of hue, value and chroma— to rendering the light effect in two layers of oil paint to create a convincing illusion of dimensional form. Cranial anatomy, materials, paint handling, brushwork, edges, and the physics of light will also be discussed throughout each session. While this workshop is mainly geared towards painters with some previous experience in oils, all artists from beginning to advanced are welcome; instruction will be customized to individual levels of experience.
Morning sessions begin with short group lectures to introduce key concepts as well as a comprehensive, narrated demonstration by Patrick. Following the demonstration and through the rest of the day, participating artists will paint from the live model, with Patrick offering detailed, customized critiques—typically, each participant will receive 20-30 minutes of personalized instructor feedback each day.

BRUSHES
Ultimately, one should invest in a variety of hairs, shapes and sizes. I work with a mix of hairs (synthetics, mongoose, sables, and bristles) in a variety of shapes (flats, rounds, filberts) and sizes (from 0 to 12). For beginners, I would recommend starting with a selection of good quality but inexpensive synthetic flat or round brushes (sizes 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10)
